Refer to ERP definition, which is integration software, ERP success is determined by all departments involved in the implementation. Now most people know that the top ERP software, such as SAP, Oracle or Microsoft cannot give ERP success warranty.
When I was a beginner of ERP implementer, I could not understand why two companies that implemented similar ERP system had different result. One company got the business benefit while another failed. Then I found there are at least three critical success factors (CSF) you should take care for ERP success. These CSF will make sure that ERP deployment will improve the company’s business process and strategic management practices.
Here are the CSF to be able to have considerable ERP success:
1. Executive management as well as key corporate players should actively involve throughout the ERP implementation. They shouldn’t limit their involvement in the initial and planning stages only. It means top management absolutely must be able to follow the implementation from its inception until project sign off. It needs to make assessment and evaluation of the impact of ERP implementation on company’s business process thoroughly, after a certain period.
2. ERP implementation requires complete reorientation and retooling of employees. It means some necessary training and skills development for employees must be provided. The training will give them, who will implement the new system, decent knowledge for deploying ERP solution at other business units.
3. Companies should keep on track the ERP deployment. Do not fast track ERP deployment in the hopes of reducing implementation cost. Fews companies that fast tracked deployment of ERP got into difficulties and failure in their implementation. Therefore companies have to carefully consider the implementation time factor. Adequate time must be allotted for deployment of ERP so that adjustments can be made carefully. It will certainly avoid messy ERP implementation and half-cooked applications knowledge.
